SANS Announces the Agenda for Boston Cyber Security Training Event

Digital Forensic Expert Terrance Maguire to Detail how to Successfully Extract Evidence from Smartphones

  • Bethesda, MD
  • February 5, 2019

SANS Institute, the global leader in cyber security training, today announced the agenda for SANS Boston Spring 2019 (#SANSBoston) taking place April 14-19 in Massachusetts. Courses will cover cyber defense, ethical hacking, penetration testing, digital forensics, and security management. Included on the agenda is a talk by Terrance Maguire, chief scientist and managing member of Digital Forensics Academy, “Using HashCat to Crack an iTunes Backup Password”.

According to Maguire, “Acquiring evidence from a locked iOS device can be difficult. In this instance an iTunes backup may be the best evidence to examine. But what happens if the iTunes backup files are encrypted? Join me in Boston where I will outline how to use HashCat to crack the encrypted iTunes backup files to get access to the data.”

In addition to his evening talk, Maguire will teach the SANS FOR585: Advanced Smartphone Forensics course. This in-depth course provides examiners and investigators with advanced skills to detect, decode, decrypt, and correctly interpret evidence recovered from mobile devices. It features 27 hands-on labs, a forensic challenge, and a bonus take-home case that allow students to analyze different datasets from smart devices and leverage the best forensic tools, methods, and custom scripts to learn how smartphone data hides.

SANS Boston Spring 2019 features courses for security professionals at every level. Those looking to begin a career in cyber security will benefit from the SEC301: Introduction to Cyber Security and the SEC401: Security Essentials Bootcamp Style courses. More seasoned professionals looking to hone their skills and advance their career will benefit from courses like SEC504: Hacker Tools, Techniques, Exploits, and Incident Handling, MGT514: Security Strategic Planning, Policy and Leadership, and SEC530: Defensible Security Architecture.
