SANS Institute and Yokohama National University Institute of Advanced Sciences (IAS) Unite to Accelerate Cybersecurity Research and Talent in the Age of AI

SANS Institute and Yokohama National University's Institute of Advanced Sciences (IAS) have signed a comprehensive partnership agreement on June 30th, 2026, marking a significant expansion of SANS's commitment to advancing cybersecurity education and research in Japan.

SANS Institute, the global leader in cybersecurity training and research, and the Institute of Advanced Sciences (IAS) at Yokohama National University (YNU) today announced a strategic partnership to strengthen cybersecurity research, accelerate the practical application of research outcomes, and cultivate the next generation of highly skilled cybersecurity professionals in Japan.

As rapid advances in artificial intelligence continue to transform the digital landscape, they are also increasing the sophistication and scale of cyber threats. Addressing these evolving risks requires stronger collaboration between academia and industry to advance cybersecurity research while ensuring that new knowledge is translated quickly into practical solutions that enhance national cyber resilience.

The Institute of Advanced Sciences at Yokohama National University has established itself as a leading center for cybersecurity research, achieving significant results across a broad range of areas, including cyberattack observation and analysis, malware research, vulnerability discovery and analysis, human factors in cybersecurity, cybercrime ecosystem analysis, and the evaluation of both beneficial and potentially harmful applications of artificial intelligence.

Through this partnership, SANS Institute and IAS will collaborate to bridge cutting-edge research with practical cybersecurity education and workforce development. By combining IAS's world-class research capabilities with SANS Institute's internationally recognised expertise in hands-on cybersecurity training delivered by experienced, field-tested instructors, the partnership aims to create new opportunities for research collaboration, technical education, and professional development. This includes pathways to GIAC certification, their globally recognised credentials that validate practitioner-level competency and open doors across government, critical infrastructure, and the private sector.

This initiative directly supports the Japanese government's ongoing efforts to strengthen national cybersecurity capabilities and expand the pipeline of highly qualified cybersecurity professionals. By fostering closer collaboration between academic research and industry practice, the partnership will help build a more resilient digital society and prepare future cybersecurity leaders to address increasingly complex threats driven by emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.

About Yokohama National University Institute of Advanced Sciences (IAS)

The Institute of Advanced Sciences (IAS) at Yokohama National University was established in October 2014 with a focus on safety engineering and risk research, and has since advanced cutting-edge, world-class research while also generating new academic fields through cross-disciplinary collaboration.
