Continuous Monitoring and Security Operations Course Now Available On-Demand at the SANS Institute

  • Bethesda, MD
  • January 22, 2015

One of the top challenges facing busy professionals is how to acquire new information without falling behind at work. Many students who can't travel to train either opt out altogether, delay training, or look for an online course.

SANS Institute, the global leader in information security training, has an innovative and effective solution. SANS is now offering one its most popular courses - SEC511: Continuous Monitoring and Security Operations - on its OnDemand online training platform. Students can now complete the course anywhere and at any time they choose.

The OnDemand course format gives students four months of online access to the SANS e-learning platform, lectures, quizzes, and course materials. Using these online tools and the full set of printed course materials, OnDemand students learn at their own pace, spend extra time on complex principles, reinforce concepts with quizzes, repeat lab exercises, and can access support from subject-matter experts - all of which increases their retention of the course material.

As a new OnDemand course, SEC511 is eligible for the current OnDemand special registration offer which gives students a $400 discount when the discount code 400A15 is used at checkout. This offer begins today and ends February 4, 2015.

SEC511: Continuous Monitoring and Security Operations focuses on building a defensible security architecture and implementing a new, proactive approach to early detection and monitoring. It will provide cybersecurity professionals with specific skills to understand new attack capabilities and continue to develop new and effective security solutions. The course will enhance students' skills in implementing continuous monitoring when utilizing the NIST framework.

"This is a course whose time has come," says Dr. Eric Cole, an industry expert and the Cyber Defense Curriculum lead at SANS Institute. "Students taking this OnDemand course will have access to information about the current state of traditional security architecture, and they'll also learn how to actually build the network and end-point security."

MacDonald Detwiler's Information Security Director, Kevin Comis, recently took SEC511 and said the course "really got me thinking about defensible architectures - very powerful stuff."

Dr. Cole notes that the number and intensity of attacks in 2014 demonstrated that cybercriminals are not letting up. Through timely detection and continuous monitoring of networks and systems, more organizations are successfully thwarting these attacks. But organizations wanting to improve their security must be able to identify critical assets, map those assets against likely threats, and determine their most significant security vulnerabilities.

"SEC511 teaches you how to do that," Dr. Cole said.
