A technology company began a product development cycle that required the hiring of additional employees. As the size of the staff increased, it quickly became apparent that the current Information Technology infrastructure would not be able to support the growing technical demands of the organization. As a result, management recruited several network engineers to design, implement, and support the new infrastructure. The responsibility of developing a security plan was delegated to me. Using the defense in depth approach, a Host Based Intrusion Detection System was deployed as a component of the security infrastructure. This practical is a 'how to' document that provides a brief overview of Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) explains design considerations and describes installation steps for the Windows 2000 Host Based Intrusion Detection System.
