Modern cloud perimeter security relies on multi-factor authentication (MFA) to safeguard enterprise directories and protect administrative access. However, legacy MFA verification channels, such as short message service (SMS) one-time passcodes and mobile application push notifications, are highly vulnerable to automated Adversary-in the-Middle (AitM) phishing kits and multi-factor authentication request generation campaigns (MFA fatigue).

This research study evaluates the efficacy of Microsoft Entra ID's native Conditional Access policies in neutralizing these attacks. Using a controlled laboratory environment with non-production test user accounts, we simulated proxybased credential harvesting and session cookie interception to identify vulnerabilities in legacy verification channels. We then designed, implemented, and validated custom Entra ID Authentication Strengths to dynamically enforce cryptographic, phishingresistant WebAuthn standards, specifically FIDO2 security keys and Windows Hello for Business.

To address operational implementation barriers, we evaluated the use of a Temporary Access Pass (TAP) as a secure bootstrapping mechanism to securely enroll hardware tokens without relying on insecure legacy methods. Finally, recognizing that enterprise perimeters are increasingly compromised through non-human accounts, this study integrates a six-tier Control Sufficiency Index (CSI) framework to secure service principals and workload identities alongside Just-in-Time administrative controls in Azure Privileged Identity Management (PIM).

The experimental findings demonstrate that enforcing domain-bound origin checks completely blocks token hijacking, reducing bypass rates to absolute zero. This research provides security architects with a robust, repeatable, and auditable operational blueprint to achieve a mature, resilient Zero Trust identity posture across modern cloud estates.
