Copyrights, Licensing, Intellectual Property Rights are all terms heard, not understood in a larger part of this global set up. With computers making way to homes in places where the cost of a computer is exceeded by the proprietary software, the resolution of the problem is undertaken by piracy. This paper will be an insight to the levels of the society to which the menace of piracy has rooted itself, the cost and the impact of 'illegal' software to the companies. A look at the organizations working to evolve new technologies that would enhance ways to access and distribute copyrighted works legally not illegally. The challenges faced by these organizations working with legal issues around the world and the sheer magnitude of the problem. Some of the interesting success stories in pursuing the remedial measures and their cost benefit analysis have also been described.
