About Ted Demopoulos

Whether you’re stepping into cybersecurity for the first time or ready to solidify your foundations, Ted Demopoulos helps his students build the skills and confidence to defend real systems. A SANS Principal Instructor of SANS SEC401: Security Essentials, Ted blends decades of consulting insight with a hands-on teaching style that helps students not only understand but apply core security principles, building confidence to defend modern networks from day one. His journey began when he first “hacked” a PDP-11 in high school. This spark grew into a lifelong pursuit of making technology secure.

With more than three decades in consulting and security operations, Ted has seen what works and what fails across startups, Fortune 500 companies, and government networks. He co-founded an early information security consultancy, served as CTO of a startup (“a textbook failure,” as he likes to say), and has advised organizations worldwide. That breadth of experience shapes every SEC401 session, where he teaches not just how to configure defenses but how to think like an analyst under pressure. Students leave understanding not only what to do, but why those decisions matter in a live environment.

Ted holds multiple advanced credentials, including GIAC Certified Incident Handler (GCIH), GIAC Certified Forensic Analyst (GCFA), GIAC Security Leadership (GSLC), and GIAC Enterprise Defender (GCED), as well as the CISSP certification. He is also a faculty member of the SANS Technology Institute, which has been designated an NSA Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense and is a multi-year winner of the National Cyber League competition. His books “Infosec Rock Star: How to Accelerate Your Career Because Geek Will Only Get You So Far” and “Getting Started in Infosec Consulting” reflect the same philosophy he brings to the course: security isn’t just about technology, it’s about people, communication, and mindset. Through his Infosec Rock Star community and talks, Ted mentors defenders worldwide, helping them turn SANS principles into real-world impact.

Students describe Ted’s classes as “the perfect balance of challenge and clarity,” where every lab reinforces real-world judgment. His approachable teaching style and storytelling turn complex topics into memorable lessons. He reminds every new defender that mastery in security begins and continues with curiosity. Outside the classroom, Ted recharges through fly fishing, great food, and family time, embodying the same balance he teaches.
