Using Secure Shell (SSH) is one way to tighten the system. It encrypts all data transmissions, including login id and password, whether through the Internet or local network. It is a 'best practice' to use Secure Shell on the local network as well because one cannot trust all the users within the network. The free version of Secure Shell is called OpenSSH. OpenSSH is widely used and is available for various platforms. The OpenSSH product replaces the telnet and rlogin with ssh replaces rcp with scp ftp with sftp. This paper shows how to setup the OpenSSH version 3.4 on Solaris 2.8 platform beginning with the development of the product and illustrates packet captures.
