More About Jerod

Profile

Jerod has worked in the field of digital forensics and incident response (“DFIR”) for the past 18 years. He has led dozens of high profile, high stakes incident response matters where speed, technical expertise, mitigation, remediation, root cause analysis, and communication to stakeholders were key components to evicting threat actors and getting businesses back up and running. Jerod got his start in 2004 with data preservation and traditional investigative forensics, then moved into e-discovery working with large law firms on multimillion dollar, “bet-the-farm” type of cases. Since 2013, Jerod has focused on incident response matters where he leads and coordinates the overall response, as well as participates in deep-dive investigative forensic analysis.

These days, Jerod works in-house as an Incident Commander at Uber where he leads high and critical incident response matters for Uber and its subsidiaries. “This is a new and exciting change from my last 17 years working for DFIR consulting companies. There is some overlap of course, but there are also some new challenges that allow for personal and professional growth”, he said.

How did he get his start in digital forensics? “I took one of the first-of-its-kind digital forensics courses back in 2003 at Portland State University, and instantly fell in love with it. I knew then and there this had to be a part of my life forever”, Jerod said. “I was fortunate enough to befriend several individuals in the ISSA Portland Chapter around that time, and things grew from there; namely a foot-in-the-door for a forensic internship, which was an experience I will forever be grateful for”.

When asked why he is so passionate about DFIR, Jerod said “I love seeking truth. I love taking multiple data sources, analyzing them, and putting critical/substantive events together in a timeline to paint a picture of what happened – whether it is large network breach with ransomware or just a few devices from a nefarious insider or company bad-leaver. And then just as important and fulfilling is reporting on those findings, to all of the key stakeholders, whether it be executive leadership, inside & outside counsel, law enforcement, technical teams, or all of the above. Creating a fact and evidence based compelling story and getting to deliver that is pretty rewarding”.

Outside of work, Jerod enjoys spending time with family and friends, creating fabulous cocktails, and traveling the world.
