About James Lyne

James Lyne has spent more than 20 years on the front lines of cybersecurity — chasing cybercriminals, reverse engineering malware, red teaming high-security organizations, supporting intelligence efforts to disrupt adversaries, and helping organizations stop the bleeding during major incidents. A self-professed “massive geek,” James has worked across offensive security, digital forensics, defensive operations, and emerging technologies, always driven by a deep fascination with how things work, how they break, and how they can be protected.

As a long-standing Certified SANS Instructor, James has taught countless students the practical skills needed to defend their organizations and strengthen society’s resilience. He has seen firsthand that the difference between an attacker succeeding or failing often comes down to one factor: whether the defender was properly trained. That belief — that human expertise is the decisive advantage in cybersecurity — has shaped his career and now defines his leadership as CEO of SANS Institute.

James chose SANS because of founder Alan Paller’s conviction that the best cybersecurity education comes from practitioners who do the work every day. Not theory. Not textbooks. Real-world expertise, shared by those actively fighting the good fight. That foundation remains central to SANS today. His path to CEO was steered by years of leadership within SANS, most recently as a trusted strategic and operational voice in the Office of the CEO. As CEO, James is advancing SANS’ legacy — ensuring cybersecurity continues to outpace adversaries by equipping defenders with the skills, judgment, and confidence they need to protect what matters most.

Throughout his career, James has also been passionate about making cybersecurity accessible and compelling beyond the practitioner community. He has delivered multiple TED Talks — including at the main TED event — and has appeared on major media outlets such as CNN, NBC, BBC News, Bill Maher, and John Oliver. Whether on stage, in the classroom, or advising organizations, he is known for bringing complex threats to life through vivid demonstrations and real-world scenarios.

Today, James is focused on leading SANS into its next chapter — one defined by rapid technological change, the rise of AI-enabled threats, and a growing global demand for skilled defenders. He firmly believes that while technology will continue to evolve, it is trained, curious, and mission-driven people who ultimately secure the future. Under his leadership, SANS is strengthening its role as the global standard for practitioner-led cybersecurity training, advancing its mission to prepare the defenders the world urgently needs.

James remains as passionate about cybersecurity as the day he began reverse engineering systems as a young enthusiast — but today, the stakes are far higher. The resilience of organizations, economies, and nations depends on defenders who are ready. That is who SANS exists for. And that is the mission he is proud to lead.
