In Kuwait, the growing demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals is creating new opportunities for individuals ready to take the next step in their careers. Through an ongoing partnership between SANS Institute, the Kuwait Institute of Banking Studies (KIBS), and the Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK), the Cyber Security Leaders Program was established to identify and develop aspiring cybersecurity talent across the country.
Combining globally recognised SANS training, GIAC certifications, hands-on labs, industry engagement, and soft skills development, the program equips participants with the practical knowledge, confidence, and professional networks needed to strengthen Kuwait’s cybersecurity workforce and prepare for long-term success in the field.
“SANS is widely respected and globally recognised so I was honoured to be selected for this program.”
For Mohammed Haitham Alsharaf, a recent Computer Engineering graduate, a career in cybersecurity had always been the goal.
Although he had completed four years studying Engineering, Mohammed recognised that standing out in an increasingly competitive job market would require more than a university degree. He saw the Cyber Security Leaders Program as an opportunity to gain globally recognised certifications and practical experience that could accelerate his career.
“Whilst other private Kuwaiti companies offer cybersecurity training, I feel that the SANS training and GIAC certifications have given me a ‘passport’ allowing me to work abroad.”
Throughout the program, Mohammed particularly valued the practical nature of the training, especially compared to traditional academic study.
“The instructors are great at keeping the class under control and ensuring everyone stays engaged. They have such positivity and enthusiasm, and I learned a lot from them.”
The hands-on approach and direct interaction with experienced instructors reinforced Mohammed’s confidence in pursuing a career in cybersecurity. The program also introduced Mohammed to a professional network he otherwise would not have had access to as a recent graduate.
“I have made connections and been able to network with peers, many of whom already hold cybersecurity roles in the banking sector. This is something I wouldn’t typically have access to as a fresh graduate.”
These networking opportunities became an important part of Mohammed’s journey, helping him better understand the industry and build relationships with professionals already working in the field.
The impact on Mohammed’s career was immediate. After completing the program, he received interview opportunities from three banks and ultimately secured a cybersecurity role with Burgan Bank.
“First and foremost, the training has given me credibility that I should be working in the cybersecurity sector.”
Looking ahead, Mohammed hopes future cohorts will have opportunities to specialise further in areas such as digital forensics, reflecting his growing interest in the field.
Mohammed’s journey highlights how the Cyber Security Leaders Program helps bridge the gap between education and employment by combining hands-on cybersecurity training, globally recognised GIAC certifications and valuable industry connections.
For graduates entering an increasingly competitive job market, the program provides more than technical knowledge. It builds credibility, confidence, and access to professional networks that can accelerate career growth and open doors within Kuwait’s growing cybersecurity sector.
