About John Nix

John started his professional career by serving 22 years on active duty in the United States Army, initially in the infantry with the United Nations Command Honor Guard, and subsequently in US Army aviation. He served in the United States Army Special Operations Command from 1990 through 2002, with assignments in the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) and a Special Mission Unit. His awards and badges include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (Oak Leaf Cluster), Air Medal, Master Aviator, Airborne, Air Assault and Joint Military Free Fall badges.

Prior to joining the SANS Institute, John served in the US defense aerospace industry for two decades in various business development, general management, and executive leadership positions including President of Tenax Aerospace, VP of DoD Programs for DynCorp International, VP and Deputy General Manager L-3 Communications, VP of Defense Avionics at BAE Systems, and Director of Programs at B/E Aerospace.

John Nix joined the SANS Institute in June 2015 as the Director of SANS’ U.S. Federal Business, responsible for building a team of professionals to focus on cybersecurity workforce management solutions for the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Federal Government, and the government contractors who support these clients.

On 1 January 2024, John took on the role of Director of International Development – Public Sector.

John received his Bachelor of Science degree in Management of Technical Operations from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2000, completed his Master of Business Administration at Harvard Business School in 2004, and Master of Divinity from Liberty University in 2021. John is certified GIAC Information Security Fundamentals (GISF) and GIAC Security Leadership (GSLC), and completed Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education Program on the Intersection of Policy and Technology.

John enjoys traveling, hiking, camping, SCUBA, cruising on his Harley Davidson, bicycling and spending time with his wife Pamela, four children and three grandchildren.
