About Ian Frist

Ian Frist is a SANS Associate Instructor and author of LDR539: Enterprise Risk Management for CISOs. He is a cybersecurity leader with a strategic focus on IT risk, compliance, and enterprise risk management across global operations. His background spans private sector and government environments, with experience securing IT and OT systems and working extensively with NIST, CIS, and CMMC frameworks.

Ian’s career includes leadership roles in cybersecurity compliance, proactive services, OT cybersecurity, public safety, emergency medical services, and military service. That range of experience gives him a practical perspective on how risk decisions affect people, operations, technology, and mission outcomes.

He holds a Master of Science in Cybersecurity from the University of Charleston and completed the Chief Risk Officer program at Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy. Ian is a CISSP, CMMC Lead CCA, PI, and holds the GIAC Strategic Planning, Policy, and Leadership certification. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at West Virginia University.
