David R. Miller teaches security leadership and CISSP preparation from decades of work translating complex systems into concepts professionals can use on the job. A SANS Principal Instructor, President at MicroLink Corporation, and lead instructor for LDR414: SANS Training Program for CISSP® Certification, David brings experience as a network engineer, consultant, security designer, architect, author, and technical instructor into the classroom. His work helps students connect broad security domains to practical judgment across risk, architecture, operations, compliance, and governance.
David has worked in network engineering, security consulting, curriculum development, and technical instruction since the early 1980s. He has lectured on information systems security, compliance, and network engineering for organizations including the Smithsonian Institution, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. military groups, federal agencies, technology companies, and global financial services firms. His consulting work has included gap analysis and remediation for Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act environments, along with security design and architecture. He brings that practitioner perspective to the course, helping students understand not just what the CISSP domains cover, but how the concepts connect in real organizations.
David holds the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) credential and lists additional credentials including 3 GIAC certifications GISF, GSEC, and GISP, PCI Qualified Security Assessor, Microsoft Certified Trainer, Microsoft Certified IT Professional, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer: Security, Certified Wireless Network Administrator, Cisco Certified Network Associate, Certified Novell Engineer, Licensed Penetration Tester, EC-Council Certified Security Analyst, Certified Ethical Hacker, and Security+. David R. Miller is also a faculty member of the SANS Technology Institute (SANS.edu). SANS.edu has been designated an NSA Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense and is a multi-year winner of the National Cyber League competition. He has authored, co-authored, or technically edited books and training materials on CISSP, SIEM, Security+, Windows Server, Exchange Server, and enterprise administration.
David teaches with the discipline of someone who has spent a career making certification, architecture, and compliance material understandable without flattening the hard parts. Students consistently rate his lectures highly, and approximately 93% of his CISSP students passed the exam on their first attempt. David teaches students to connect CISSP domains to practical security, compliance, architecture, and governance decisions, drawing on decades of work as an instructor, author, consultant, and technical editor.
David does a great job presenting the material and relating it to real world situations. Class pace is perfect.
This course was great. David knew his stuff and had meaningful input on every relevant CISSP question that was asked of him. I feel like this course helped to solidify skills that I have with relevant information and helped me think about cyber security in a much more holistic way.
David is obviously very knowledgeable and I think he's a very good instructor. You can tell he really cares about his job. He has also made himself very accessible during and after class.
Here are upcoming opportunities to train with this expert instructor.
