Here’s what to expect

Cyber Quest CTF, powered by SANS Institute and RBC, is your chance to see what it's like to work as a cybersecurity professional.

A Capture the flag (CTF) is a hands-on cybersecurity competition where you solve real-world security challenges to earn points. It's a digital scavenger hunt: you'll investigate and defend your way through a series of puzzles that mirror the kinds of problems security professionals tackle every day. No prior experience required.

  • A 72-hour challenge window. Compete on your own schedule, when it works for you.
  • Real-world scenarios. Work through challenges built around actual security concepts.
  • A supportive learning environment. The challenges are designed to teach you as you go, whether you’re a cybersecurity major or just getting curious about the field.
  • Prizes for top performers. The top 50 and 15 finishers will be recognized for their skills and receive additional training opportunities.
  • A chance to connect in person. Selected participants will be invited to an in-person event in Vancouver this November.

Eligibility

You must be eighteen (18) years of age or older to participate in Cyber Quest CTF. To be eligible for awards, recognition, and the RBC post-event reception, you must also: 1. Register for the Cyber Quest CTF Orientation Webinar using your SANS account associated with an email address from a valid post-secondary educational institution in British Columbia; 2. Use the same school-issued email address when registering for Cyber Quest CTF on Ranges.io; and 3. If identified by SANS as a potential top finisher, you must promptly complete and submit the RBC registration form provided by SANS after Cyber Quest CTF concludes. SANS may verify satisfaction of these eligibility requirements before determining or distributing any award or recognition.

Cyber Quest CTF runs continuously for 72 hours,  

Start: Thursday, October 22 at 11 am PT  

End: Sunday, October 25 at 11 am PT. 

Registration closes: Wednesday, October 19 at 11 am PT.

Registration for and participation in Cyber Quest CTF does not require you to consent to sharing your personal information with Royal Bank of Canada (“RBC”). However, to be eligible for the awards, recognition, and RBC post-event reception described below, you will be required to complete a separate RBC registration form following the conclusion of the Cyber Quest CTF.

If you are identified as a potential top finisher, SANS will contact you using the email address associated with your Cyber Quest CTF registration and provide a link to the RBC registration form. By choosing to complete and submit the RBC registration form, you will provide your information directly to RBC in accordance with the disclosures and consents presented by RBC on that form. SANS will not provide your personal information to RBC for these purposes.

Cyber Quest CTF is a skills-based competition. Subject to verification of the eligibility requirements above, awards and recognition will be based on participant performance under the applicable competition rules and scoring methodology established by SANS. SANS reserves the right to verify eligibility and compliance with event rules before recognizing a participant as a top finisher.

The top fifty (50) eligible finishers will receive six (6) months access to SANS Skills Quest by NetWars – Core Edition, valued at four hundred and ninety-five dollars ($495.00 USD).

The top fifteen (15) eligible finishers will receive four (4) months of access to SANS SEC275: Foundations: Computers, Technology & Security, valued at nine hundred and ninety-nine dollars ($999.00 USD) along with the corresponding GIAC Foundational Cybersecurity Technologies (GFACT) exam attempt, valued at three hundred and ninety-nine dollars ($399.00 USD).

The top fifty (50) eligible finishers of Cyber Quest CTF will be invited to an in-person reception to recognize their Cyber Quest CTF achievements, receive any applicable awards, and provide an opportunity to network with industry professionals. The Ranges.io leaderboard reflects competition performance only and is not the final determination of award recipients. Following the conclusion of Cyber Quest CTF, SANS will verify participant performance and satisfaction of all applicable eligibility requirements before determining the final award recipients. A participant's appearance or ranking on the Ranges.io leaderboard does not, by itself, establish eligibility for or entitlement to an award.

If you are identified as a potential top finisher but do not timely complete and submit the RBC registration form, you will not be eligible for an award, recognition, or invitation to the RBC post-event reception. SANS may then recognize the next highest-performing participant who satisfies all eligibility requirements.

Awards are subject to applicable enrollment, access, and redemption requirements communicated by SANS. Awards are non-transferable, have no cash value, and may not be redeemed for cash, credit, refunds, or alternative products or services. SANS may substitute similar awards if an award becomes unavailable or cannot be provided due to legal, regulatory, operational, or other requirements.

Participation in Cyber Quest CTF, placement on the Ranges.io leaderboard, recognition as a top finisher, receipt of an award, or attendance at the SANS - RBC reception does not guarantee an interview, internship, employment opportunity, offer, or other engagement with RBC.
