The SANS Cyber Workforce Academy - Maryland is a four-month accelerated cybersecurity training program open only to Maryland residents and provides jobseekers with advanced technical training, industry-recognized GIAC certifications and hands-on cyber defense and incident handling skills sought by Maryland employers.

SANS Cyber Workforce Academy - Maryland is funded in part by funds received from EARN Maryland, a Grant program of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR). The Academy will train Maryland residents, with a focus on U.S. Military veterans and women, over the next two years in highly sought-after cybersecurity skills to provide them a pathway into the cybersecurity workforce. EARN Maryland is a state program dedicated to the workforce needs of Maryland's cybersecurity and IT industries.

You are not eligible for this program if you:

  • Do not live in or have proof of permanent residency in the state of Maryland
  • Are currently employed in an information security or technology position outside of the military
  • Have prior work experience in information security outside of the military
  • Are currently pursuing or hold a master's degree or PhD in information security
  • Are not a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident of Maryland

Priority may be given to applicants not currently working in information technology (IT).

SANS serves as the lead entity of the Strategic Industry Partnership for the Academy and has partnered with three non-profit organizations and twenty employers to implement the program and ensure a pathway for participants into the cybersecurity workforce.

How the Program Works

Interested candidates will follow the application process below:

  • Candidate completes a web application form
  • The application will be reviewed and an assessment test sent within three days.
  • Candidates must complete the assessment test within five days, unless otherwise specified
  • Test results are reviewed once a week and candidates will receive an invitation to submit supporting documents including a resume and formal transcripts to complete their application
  • Qualified candidates will be invited to a phone interview
  • All candidates will be informed of their application status within four weeks of the application deadline

Cyber Workforce Academy participants will complete three training modules:

  • Cyber Foundations Module: Cyber Aces Online
  • Cyber Defense Essentials Module: SANS SEC401: Security Essentials Bootcamp Style) and GSEC Certification
  • Incident Handling Module: SANS SEC504: Hacker Tools, Techniques, Exploits, and Incident Handling and GCIH Certification

Timeline

Cyber Workforce Academy - MD

  • Applications open
  • Ongoing admissions — candidates considered for various cohorts based on when they apply/available seats in live training
  • New cohorts launch every 45-90 days (depending on classroom availability)
  • Program completion takes approximately four months

Course Set Up

Students will begin their academy program by completing the Cyber Foundations Module online as they prepare to then attend the Cyber Defense Essentials module live for six full days unless otherwise indicated or approved by SANS.

Cyber Workforce Academy - Maryland students continue to study Cyber Defense Essentials at home for an additional seven weeks after the six days onsite, preparing for the GIAC certification exam. Students who successfully passes the certification exam move on to the Incident Handling module via SANS OnDemand and have eight weeks to complete the course and certification exam.

Cyber Workforce Academy Eligibility Requirements

The Cyber Workforce Academy - Maryland is only open to Maryland residents not currently employed in a cybersecurity or IT related field or transitioning military personnel that are currently stationed in or are permanent residents of Maryland with valid proof of residency. Priority may be given to applicants not currently working in IT.

Transitioning Military:

  • Transitioning service members not more than six months away from separation.
  • Active duty spouses not working in the information security field or with prior work experience from the information security field.

Veterans:

  • Veterans not currently working in the information security field or have prior work experience from the information security field outside of the military service.
  • Veterans not currently working in an information technology (IT) related field.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Legal Resident (Green card holder).

Women:

  • College seniors or students in their final year of Community College; preferably (not required) pursuing a degree in a Computer/IT-related field or technical STEM discipline.
  • College graduates (Bachelor’s or Associates level) and career changers currently not working in the information security field or with prior work experience from the information security field.
  • College graduates (Bachelor’s or Associates level) not currently working in an information technology (IT) related field.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal resident (Green card holder) currently residing in Maryland.

Minorities:

  • College seniors or students in their final year of Community College; preferably (not required) pursuing a degree in a Computer/IT-related field or technical STEM discipline.

Time Commitment for Students

The Academy is a fast-track, intensive program and students are expected to complete all coursework and certifications in three to four months. On average, it takes most SANS students 80 hours to prepare for one GIAC certification attempt.

The first module will be delivered online. The second module, which includes the SEC401: SANS Security Essential Bootcamp style, will be taken in a live classroom environment in Maryland. The course will run for six full days and all participants are required to attend. The final module is taken online via SANS OnDemand.
