From ABCNews stories1 to articles in on-line publications such as Yahoo! Internet Life2 and convergemag.com3, it is widely recognized that one of the largest populations in the US with access to high-speed Internet connections are students living in college dorms. Many campuses even require incoming students to own a computer. This means that at the start of each Fall term, thousands of students bring a computer up to campus and plug it in to the network. It is possible to bring student computers into your network and still maintain the confidentiality, integrity and availability that are the hallmarks of a secure network. This paper addresses basic areas of information security such as policy, security awareness training, restricting access, monitoring and intrusion detection, and incident response that can keep your networks as secure as possible.
