C++ Vulnerability Discovery in Complex Applications
Stephen Sims, SANS Faculty Fellow
Abstract:
Binary vulnerability discovery and exploitation in modern and complex applications written in low-level languages is a challenging undertaking. It requires patience, experience, creativity, and time. The harder part comes after discovery, which is debugging and weaponization. Not every vulnerability is exploitable. Much time can be spent reversing and debugging before coming to that conclusion. Why? There could be exploit mitigations preventing exploitation. There could also be required conditions that are highly unlikely to be met. The more time you spend in this area of focus, the faster you’ll become. Join me in this presentation where we will walk through a couple different ways to approach finding these types of bugs and how to determine the likelihood of exploitability.
