  • Security Network Auditing: Can Zero-Trust Be Achieved? Graduate Student Research

    Since 2010, government and business organizations have begun to adopt the Zero-Trust framework. Although the concept is a decade old, organizations are still in the infant stages of its implementation. Given that tablets and mobile phones have become an intricate part of business aids, all organizations will eventually integrate Zero-Trust into their environments. Many third-party vendors market Zero-Trust tools; though, they only provide one or two pieces to achieve "true" Zero-Trust. Designing a security auditing Zero-Trust framework, professionals must use a layered approach to defense-in-depth. They must also understand the principle of Least Common Mechanism because complicated information technology systems are challenging to control. In traditional perimeter networks, users must authenticate to an entire organizational network, where perimeter-less Zero-Trust networks are segmented; thus, users can log on a Zero-Trust network by accessing a single-segment at a time. This technology eliminates the need for virtual private networks (VPN), thus, providing faster access. Additionally, most organizations state they audit their systems. However, this project focuses on auditing Zero-Trust devices, applications, data, and network traffic, not continuous logging. When implementing the Zero-Trust framework, organizations will learn how to plan and audit for adequate security.

  • Triaging the Enterprise for Application Security Assessments Graduate Student Research

    Conducting a full array of security tests on all applications in an enterprise may be infeasible due to both time and cost. According to the Center for Internet Security, the purpose of application specific and penetration testing is to discover previously unknown vulnerabilities and security gaps within the enterprise. These activities are only warranted after an organization attains significant security maturity, which results in a large backlog of systems that need testing. When organizations finally undertake the efforts of penetration testing and application security, it can be difficult to choose where to begin. Computing environments are often filled with hundreds or thousands of different systems to test and each test can be long and costly. At this point in the testing process, little information is available about an application beyond the computers involved, the owners, data classification, and the extent to which the system is exposed. With so few variables, many systems are likely to have equal priority. This paper suggests a battery of technical checks that testers can quickly perform to stratify the vast array of applications that exist in the enterprise ecosystem. This process allows the security team to focus efforts on the riskiest systems first.

The world is full of technical and administrative compliance requirements, understanding where gaps are present is not something to be afraid of, but to readily embrace and act upon those deficiencies.   • A Framework for Assessing 20 Critical Controls Using ISO 15504 and COBIT 5 Process Assessment Model (PAM) Graduate Student Research

    The 20 critical controls, maintained by the Council on CyberSecurity, present a prioritized road map for organizations to enhance their information security posture. However, an initial review that serves as a "baseline" must first be performed to know the current information security posture and to ascertain the effort required to implement the critical controls. Furthermore, assessments or audits should be performed periodically to gauge the continual improvement in information security as well as to what extent the critical controls have been implemented. This paper presents a unified and repeatable framework that could be used for the initial gap analysis as well as to measure the continual enhancements in implementation of the critical controls. The concepts presented in this paper draw heavily from the contents contained in "ISO/IEC 15504 Information technology - Process assessment" standard and COBIT5 Process Assessment Model (PAM). The information presented in ISO 15504 and COBIT 5 PAM is adapted for the assessment of critical controls. A unified approach in assessing the implementation status of each critical control as well as the sub-controls is presented based on an incremental measuring scale. The other peripheral elements of the assessment such as the details of assessment process (planning, initiation, fieldwork reporting), assessor qualifications, and competency are also detailed out resulting in a comprehensive framework for assessing the 20 critical controls.
