Overview: Automotive Cybersecurity Summit

Automotive industry leaders gathered in Detroit last week to discuss cybersecurity and the evolving threat landscape. Topics ranged from V2X (v2v, v2i, v2?) security and privacy, to use cases and creating testing environments, to how to talk to management and convey the business need for workforce development. Following the summit, SANS hosted a special run of SEC504: Hacker Tools, Techniques, Exploits, and Incident Handling - Automotive's top course for penetration testing.

In his keynote, Mike Assante shared the 5 Cs of the Future:

  • Competency
  • Connectivity
  • Convergence
  • Complexity
  • Collaboration

This set the theme for the summit but also challenged attendees to reflect on how their organizations were finding a balance. As Lisa Boran of Ford Vehicle Cybersecurity reminded us, "it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when."

Director of the Auto-ISAC, Faye Francy grew upon this and shared that cybersecurity is a team sport, "with one company's detection comes another company's prevention." Improved collaboration will raise the level of conversation and drive innovation. We can also benefit from opportunities discovered by our friends in adjacent industries such as aviation, defense and heavy machinery, especially as we consider our responsibility throughout the lifeycle of the vehicle.

With connectivity comes increased complexity and risk. But how do we communicate this to management? As it was echoed through the event — brand management. Organizations must be incredibly mindful of how vulnerabilities reflect upon the business. "You can't trust the safety or the quality of your product without security" said Paul Bierdeman, Senior Engineer, Caterpillar Inc.

From the summit, we gathered that successful organizations:

  • embrace a culture of learning
  • recognize need for training & shared perspective
  • develop skilled people & integrated functional teams
  • are the product of practice & teamwork

The SANS Automotive Cybersecurity Summit & Training was created in effort to help safeguard organizations and their products against threats and attacks. We aim to provide an intimate networking environment and team building opportunities.

Thank you to our guests and speakers and to our reception sponsors, IO Active. Details of the 2018 summit will be announced soon.
