The SANS Cyber Workforce Academy - Chicago is a three-to-four-month accelerated cybersecurity training program in the greater Chicago area (City of Chicago, Chicago Suburbs, Southeast Wisconsin) that provides jobseekers with advanced technical training, industry-recognized GIAC certifications and hands-on cyber defense, continuous monitoring, and incident handling skills sought by local employers. Candidates must be willing to work and commute to Chicago and/or the NW suburbs.

SANS Cyber Workforce Academy - Chicago will train U.S. military veterans and women based in in the greater Chicago area in highly sought-after cybersecurity skills and provide them a pathway into the cybersecurity workforce. SANS will work to connect potential graduates with local employer partners.

How the Program Works

Interested candidates will follow the application process below:

  1. Candidate completes a web application form
  2. The application will be reviewed and an assessment test sent within three days.
  3. Candidates must complete the assessment test within five days, unless otherwise specified
  4. Test results are reviewed at least once a week, and candidates will receive an invitation to submit supporting documents including a resume and formal transcripts to complete their application
  5. Qualified candidates will be invited to a phone interview. Additional phone and/or in-person interviews with employer partners may follow, if applicable
  6. All candidates will be informed of their application status within two weeks of the application deadline

Cyber Workforce Academy - Chicago participants will complete three training courses:

  • SEC401: SANS Security Essentials (GSEC certification) - live attendance required
  • SEC511: Continuous Monitoring and Security Operations (GMON certification) - completed online
  • SEC504: Hacker Tools, Techniques, Exploits, and Incident Handling (GCIH certification) - completed online

Eligibility Requirements

The Cyber Workforce Academy - Chicago is open to target participants (see below) in the greater Chicago area (Chicago, Chicago Suburbs, Southeast Wisconsin) not currently employed in a cybersecurity related field. Candidates must be willing to work and commute in the greater Chicago area.

Transitioning Military:

  • Transitioning service members not more than six months away from separation.
  • Active duty spouses not working in the information security field or with prior work experience from the information security field.

Veterans:

  • Veterans not currently working in the information security field or have prior work experience from the information security field outside of the military service.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Legal Resident (Green card holder).

Women:

  • Seniors in college; preferably (not required) pursuing a degree in a Computer/IT-related field or technical STEM discipline.
  • College graduates and career changers currently not working in the information security field or with prior work experience from the information security field.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Legal Resident (Green card holder) and currently residing in the greater Chicago area

Time Commitment for Students

The Academy is a fast-track, intensive program and students are expected to complete all coursework and certifications in three to four months. On average, it takes most SANS students 80 hours to prepare for one GIAC certification attempt.

The first course, SEC401: SANS Security Essentials course will be taken in a live classroom environment in the greater Chicago area. The second and third courses, SEC511 and SEC504, will be taken online via SANS OnDemand.

Course Set Up

Students will begin their academy program by attending the SEC401 course live for six full days unless otherwise indicated or approved by SANS.

Cyber Workforce Academy students continue to study for the GSEC certification at home for an additional four weeks after the six days onsite. Students who successfully pass the certification exam will move on to the SEC 511 course via OnDemand and upon successful completion of the GMON certification, will proceed to take SEC504 course via SANS OnDemand and complete the GCIH certification exam.
