SANS Threat Analysis Rundown Webcast

COVID-19 has affected all aspects of our daily lives, and our adversaries have been affected too. In recent weeks, we've seen threats change, whether in phishing themes or decisions whether to target hospitals. Hear from our panel of experts, including Alex Guirakhoo from Digital Shadows and Sherrod DeGrippo from Proofpoint, who will share the latest on what theyve seen from threats in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our speakers will explain their observations based on different perspectives and visibility into what adversaries are doing. Well also discuss how defenders should respond, including whether we need to do anything differently from our pre-COVID-19 world.

Speaker Bios

Katie Nickels

Katie is a SANS instructor for FOR578: Cyber Threat Intelligence and a Principal Intelligence Analyst for Red Canary. She has worked on cyber threat intelligence (CTI), network defense, and incident response for nearly a decade for the DoD, MITRE, Raytheon, and ManTech.  Katie hails from a liberal arts background with degrees from Smith College and Georgetown University, embracing the power of applying liberal arts prowess to cybersecurity. With more than a dozen publications to her name, Katie has shared her expertise with presentations at Black Hat, multiple SANS Summits, Sp4rkcon, and many other events. Katie has also served as a co-chair of the SANS CTI Summit and FIRST CTI Symposium. She was the 2018 recipient of the President's Award from the Women's Society of Cyberjutsu and serves as the Program Manager for the Cyberjutsu Girls Academy, which seeks to inspire young women to learn more about STEM. Alex Guirakhoo

Alex is a Threat Research Analyst at Digital Shadows. Having joined the company in mid-2016, he primarily conducts research and provides analysis on cyber security trends. Alex earned his Master's degree in Intelligence and International Security from King's College London, and holds a Bachelor's degree in Politics and International Relations from the University of Kent. His interests include the intersect between global politics and the cyber sphere, as well as all things OSINT and Shiba Inu.

Sherrod DeGrippo

Sherrod DeGrippo is the Sr. Director of Threat Research and Detection for Proofpoint, Inc. She leads a worldwide malware research team to advance Proofpoint threat intelligence and keep organizations safe from cyberattacks. With more than 16 years of information security experience, Sherrod successfully directs her 24/7 team to investigate advanced threats, release multiple daily security updates and create scalable threat intelligence solutions that integrate directly into Proofpoint products.

In her 16 years of information security experience, she has been quoted in publications such was The Wall Street Journal, Associated Press and Ars Technica. Sherrod is a well known public speaker on topics such as the threat landscape, threat actor psychology and advanced attack techniques. She specializes in programs and topics around advanced persistent threat, and teaches organizations and executives how to best extract intelligence from existing solutions.
