Small and medium businesses are increasingly targeted by cyber-attacks and the costs of a breach, if it occurs, can cause irreparable damage to the company; yet many smaller organizations have historically encountered obstacles to proactively protecting their networks - lack of policies, resources and technology needed to protect smaller organizations have all been cited as reasons not to implement effective cyber defense - Today, advances in technology and available service offerings can fill the many of these gaps at reasonable costs (some available tools are even free) without staffing increases. Speaker Bios

John Pescatore

John Pescatore joined SANS as director of emerging security trends in January 2013. He has 35 years experience in computer, network and information security. Prior to joining the SANS Institute, Mr. Pescatore was Gartnerís lead security analyst for 13 years, working with global 5000 corporations and major technology and service providers. Before joining Gartner, Mr. Pescatore was Senior Consultant for Entrust Technologies and Trusted Information Systems, where he started, grew and managed security consulting groups focusing on firewalls, network security, encryption and Public Key Infrastructures. Prior to that, Mr. Pescatore spent 11 years with GTE developing secure computing and telecommunications systems. Mr. Pescatore began his career at the National Security Agency, where he designed secure voice systems, and the United States Secret Service, where he developed secure communications and surveillance systems. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Connecticut and is a NSA Certified Cryptologic Engineer. He is also an Extra class amateur radio operator, callsign K3TN.

Brian Mehlman

Brian Mehlman has over 20 years' experience working in senior technical, product marketing and management positions with innovative and industry leading software companies. Prior to EiQ Networks, Brian helped deliver solutions in the areas of Network, Systems, Storage and Security management for Q1 Labs, Network Appliance, 3COM Corporation, Fidelity Investments and Hewlett Packard. Brian played an integral role in two successful acquisitions: Metrix Network Systems by Hewlett Packard and Webmanage Technologies by Network Appliance. Brian earned a bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from Gordon College, and a Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Vermont.
