Overview

It is no secret that there is a significant dearth of technical cybersecurity professionals. To effectively close this growing skills gap, we must radically enhance the talent pipeline by identifying and reskilling individuals with high aptitude and passion. While traditional academic routes often fail to attract under-represented populations into cybersecurity, recruitment efforts have proven effective by engaging these groups at the career transition stage. We will highlight successful programs that have reskilled hundreds of individuals through training and certification and into cyber jobs over the past four years as well as innovative employer approaches to talent development.

Speaker Bios

Maxwell Shuftan

Max leads business development for the CyberTalent division of the SANS Institute. In this role, he conducts outreach and external engagement to employers and non-profit organizations. SANS CyberTalent helps organizations in both the public and private sectors address their cybersecurity human capital needs through programs like VetSuccess, the Women's Immersion Academy, and others.

Max has worked in the public affairs and stakeholder engagement arena of cybersecurity for the last five years, working with Government, corporate, and not-for-profit organizations, most recently as a Vice President at Cambridge Global Advisors, a homeland security strategic advisory services firm. He also previously served as the national recruitment director for the Cyber Aces Foundation, a nonprofit organization that trained and educated veterans, jobseekers, and students in cybersecurity via online training modules. Max also has supported the Department of Homeland Security’s CyberSkills Management Support Initiative (CMSI), an initiative within NPPD focused on building partnerships with academic institutions and NGOs as well as growing the cybersecurity talent pipeline through programs like the Cyber Student Volunteer Initiative.


Bill Seaman

Bill Seaman is the Senior Technical Recruiter for Dragos and has over 20 years’ experience building, managing, implementing, and executing talent acquisition strategies, including processes and technology, supporting fast-growth organizations. He is current work includes setting up new pipelines and pathways for people looking to work in ICS.


Rich Arellano

Rich has been with Citi for over 8 years and is a Global Program Manager supporting cyber security, professional development, program and project management, strategic planning, multimedia design and communications for CSIS Global Operations. One of his many responsibilities is for the development of the cyber security curriculum, aligning our staff to the NICE framework, training strategy and execution. I manage a global SANS cyber master's program with 60 students developing our staff to build operational capabilities in all areas of cyber security. Prior to CSIS, Rich was the Best-In-Class (BIC) Finance training lead--working on Global Finance system implementations such as Full Suite and GPO process mapping. Rich studied adult education at the University of Northern Colorado and has created training content for many fortune 500 companies including Qwest Communications, AT&T and ADT Security Services. He has over 15 years of experience in Professional Development & Communications and has extensive hours of both classroom and virtual training. Rich is on the advisory board for cybersecurity at USF. Rich’s hobbies include photography, travel, reading, playing chess and organic gardening. Rich participates in many networks at Citi and has been on the steering committees of the Asia Pacific Heritage Network, Tampa Green Team as well as the Hispanic/ Latino Heritage Network.


Sarah Kearsley

Sarah Kearsley is a graduate of the SANS Women’s Academy, where she earned GSEC, GCIH, and GCIA and successfully transitioned into the field of cybersecurity. She now works as a Security Analyst at ThermoFisher Scientific.
