The theft of Protected Health Information (\PHI") shows no signs of slowing, as compromised patient data is being used daily to engage in outright fraud. Activities range from illegally accessing a variety of medical services and procuring prescription drugs, to defrauding insurance providers and passing undue expense onto the consumer. The theft and illegal use of PHI not only threatens the economics of our healthcare system, but also puts lives at risk and erodes patient trust. This webcast will present examples of PHI being bought and sold on the Internet, convey some of the means that criminals are using to obtain PHI, and conclude with considerations for improving security operations to identify and ideally prevent the theft of patient data.
