Overview

Cyber ranges in various forms have been around for several years, but they are now starting to gain traction. Organizations have realized in order to deal with evolving threats they need to invest in enhancing cyber skills, and cyber range offerings that focus on hands-on education can provide powerful tools to accomplish this.

The killer need that cyber ranges have addressed is increasing the skill level of the cybersecurity staff, which enables increasing business safety without requiring unsustainable increases in security program spending. That provides a measurable, demonstrable benefit and provides the foundation for more complex future use of a cyber range for threat simulation or assessment of new security controls.

Cyber ranges can range from multi-million dollar investments in hardware and software to consumption of Cyber range as a service. In order to help the security community evaluate cyber range offerings and choose the best approach for their needs, SANS and Cyber Velocity have developed the Critical Security Questions to Ask a Cyber Range Provider guide. At his webinar John Pescatore of SANS and Ted Ritter of Cyber Velocity will provide a business-driven description of cyber ranges and highlight 20 critical questions that can be used as the basis for Requests for Proposals and evaluation criteria.
