SANS Analytics and Intelligence Survey Results Part II: Tools and Techniques

During June and July, SANS conducted a survey that was taken by 647 individuals to explore how organizations are dealing with their security data for better analysis and detection. In this second installment of our two-part survey webcast series, Dave Shackleford will discuss how many organizations are implementing tools and techniques to deal with their big security data analytics problems. What are their biggest drivers for better analytics and intelligence, how many of them are using additional 'intelligence' tools and threat databases, and how are they automating pattern recognition? (A hint: About a third of them are still acting on 'hunches,' which is good from a skills perspective but impractical on a large scale.) Dave Shackleford is the owner and principal consultant of Voodoo Security and a SANS analyst, senior instructor, and course author. He has consulted with hundreds of organizations in the areas of security, regulatory compliance, and network architecture and engineering, and is a VMware vExpert with extensive experience designing and configuring secure virtualized infrastructures. He has previously worked as CSO for Configuresoft, CTO for the Center for Internet Security, and as a security architect, analyst, and manager for several Fortune 500 companies. Dave is the author of the Sybex book Virtualization Security: Protecting Virtualized Environments, as well as the coauthor of Hands-On Information Security from Course Technology. Recently Dave coauthored the first published course on virtualization security for the SANS Institute. Dave currently serves on the board of directors at the SANS Technology Institute and helps lead the Atlanta chapter of the Cloud Security Alliance.
Mike Reagan is the chief marketing officer at LogRhythm and brings a successful track record in marketing, business development and sales management in the security, storage, networking and software industries spanning over 24 years. Before joining LogRhythm he was VP of Sales and Marketing at Vericept, where he was a member of the founding executive team. During his seven year tenure, he played a critical role in driving compound annual growth of over 90% and establishing the company as a market leader in Data Leak Prevention. Reagan has also held a variety of executive management positions in Sales, Marketing, Channels and Strategic Alliances at OnStream, Inc., Decisioneering, Inc. (now a division of Oracle) and EMC Corp. He holds a B.A. degree from Providence College.
Nicole Pauls is a Director of Product Management for security information and event management (SIEM) at SolarWinds, an IT management software provider based in Austin, Texas. Nicole has worked in all aspects of IT from help desk support, to network, security, and systems administration, to complete IT responsibility over the span of 10 years. She became a product manager to help bring accessible IT management software to the masses. She joined SolarWinds with the acquisition of Log & Event Manager in 2011.
Katherine Lam is the Product Marketing Manager in the Enterprise Security Products division at HP. She is responsible for marketing the security information and event management solution at HP. Prior to her current role, Katherine was the Product Manager for an application security SaaS service. Katherine has over 12 years of experience in Product Management, Product Marketing and IT Management.
