NCSAM

The theme for the second week of October is Educating for a Career in CybersecurityThe internet is a critical resource we all depend on, and we need a larger workforce dedicated to protecting it. Whether you’re still in school, a veteran, re-entering the workforce or simply seeking a change – consider a career in cybersecurity. If you have not done so yet, review the NCSAM Planning Matrix (included in the kit) and identify the activities and resources you want to leverage for this week.  Start by using the communications template to let people know what to expect this week and WHY they should care.

If you’re seeking a new career path, enjoy challenges, and are eager to continue learning, consider a career in cyber security! The demand for cyber security professionals continues to grow, outpacing the number of college students graduating with related degrees. The US is also seeing a decrease in the number of female college students choosing a career in STEM related fields. To find enough professionals to fill open positions, we need professionals already in the workforce to develop cyber security skills. Professionals looking for a change or experiencing a decrease in demand for their current skill sets may find reskilling opportunities through the SANS Cyber Immersion Academy and CyberStart programs.

The Cyber Immersion Academies offer intensive, four to six-month training programs providing the hands-on technical skills and industry recognized GIAC certifications sought by employers. SANS currently offers multiple scholarship-based Academies for eligible veterans, women, and racial and ethnic minorities to increase diversity in the workforce.  Learn more at:  https://www.sans.org/cybertalent/cybersecurity-career/seekers.

College students also have an opportunity for cyber security training through the SANS CyberStart program, an online learning platform with over one hundred hours of content and labs, designed to teach computer, hardware, network and security fundamentals. New dates and participating institutions will be announced soon.  Learn more at the CyberStart site or test your cybersecurity aptitude and skills by trying the CyberStartGo cyber challenges at https://go.joincyberdiscovery.com/. CyberStartGo provides a series of 60-minute challenges allowing players a taste of the experiences they would encounter as a cyber security professional.  New programs are added often so keep checking our website to find the right program for you!
