  • April 12, 2016

SANS Institute, the global leader in information security training, today announced the keynote speakers for the 2016 Security Operations Center (SOC) Summit, taking place May 19 - 26 in Crystal City, VA. Carson Zimmerman, MITRE Principal Cybersecurity Engineer, will present the opening keynote address. Renowned cyber security expert and SANS Fellow, Dr. Eric Cole, will deliver the keynote address on day two. Zimmerman and Cole will join other industry leaders in sharing first-hand experiences and new ideas for establishing effective security operations.

During his keynote address, "Ten Strategies of a World-Class Cyber Security Operations Center (CSOC)", Zimmerman will share observations on what it takes to do computer network defense well in the modern IT enterprise. He will present ten fundamental qualities of an effective CSOC that cut across the elements of people, process, and technology as discussed in his book. Free hard copies of Zimmerman's book will be available for attendees.

According to summit co-chair, Mary N. Chaney, Esq., CISSP, Director of Security Operations Center for Johnson & Johnson, "The Ten Strategies of a World-Class Cybersecurity Operations Center" is one of the reference books I used when creating the SOC at J&J. It is a valuable resource for anyone, no matter what stage of security operations. To hear Carson explain these strategies in person is an opportunity those involved in security operations centers should not miss."

Dr. Cole's keynote address, "The Evolving Role of the SOC," will outline how to evaluate the current state of a SOC, identify gaps, and provide a checklist for improving the overall effectiveness. Dr. Cole will share key metrics and show how to achieve a concise security dashboard.

Some of the best minds in the business will join forces with Zimmerman and Dr. Cole in sharing their experiences with building out an organization's security operations center and best practices for increasing the efficiencies and effectiveness of response. Experts will present case studies to help attendees identify gaps in their SOC, use threat intelligence effectively, and develop meaningful metrics to define their SOC's success. Attendees will also learn how to identify and retain the talent needed to help SOCs evolve along with the dynamic threat landscape.
