Network Security Evolved: Enabling DNSSEC

  • Johannes Ullrich, Ph.D.
  • Wednesday, September 21st, 6:15pm - 7:15pm

DNS has long been identified as an Achilles heel of many networks. Over the years, DNS has been patched and improved, but core weaknesses of the protocol are only addressed by shifting to DNSSEC. As of this year, top level domains like .com, .org and .gov do offer trust anchors, making the roll out of DNSSEC possible. The standard has been sufficiently refined and tested to provide guidance as to how to implement and manage DNSSEC signed zones.

This talk will provide a brief introduction in to DNS weaknesses and attacks, followed by how DNSSEC mitigates these problems. We will illustrate how to implement DNSSEC either for recursive resolvers or authoritative zones. Alternatives to DNSSEC will be discussed as to their merits and implementability.
