Boring Solutions

  • Matthew J. Harmon
  • Tuesday, August 13th, 7:15pm - 8:15pm

We spend much of our time adding glam and action around what should be utterly boring. We check (or uncheck) a box, update a True to False value in a .conf file - or maybe we'll slide a box into a slot next to all the others, and then soon after, try to wire it up like the diagram someone else made, that doesn't match the rainbow of cords in front of you. Alternatively, maybe you're wiping your hands of shared responsibility and rack space as you upload everything to someone else's computers around the world.

This talk is about you. "They" only need to find one weakness among thousands to exploit but we need to cover everything, "bake in security" from the beginning, and throw on multiple layers of magic math and known proper configuration settings just to process a credit card. Depending on who joins for the talk we'll address different approaches to systems design. Come explain your latest problem, and we'll brainstorm for a few minutes about a boring solution.

Speaker Bio: Matthew J. Harmon has over 20 years of experience in systems and network administration, incident analysis and response, forensic investigations, cyber intelligence, malware analysis, architecture engineering, security auditing, penetration testing, tactical risk assessments, executive advising, international standards development, teaching, and conference organizing.
