Chrome Extensions: Security Violation

  • Rebecca Blair
  • Friday, October 9th, 12:30pm - 12:50pm

Chrome, by far is the most popular web browser. One of the differentiators of chrome, is the amount of extensions that you can add to your browser. Anything from keeping your computer awake, to rotating tabs, to money saving extensions. It should come as no surprise then, that these extensions have become a large threat vector. Google constantly has to remove extensions that are malicious and have bypassed their security scans. Even for extensions that are not malicious, a large amount of them send browsing data to third party servers, which is a violation of your privacy, and more than likely a violation of your organizations security policy. How do you know which extensions are sending data, and are fraudulent? How do implement a procedure thatās doesnāt exclude one of Chromeās most popular features, but at that same time keeps your organization safe?
