When banking fraud meets Security Operations: A practical approach

  • Carlos Valderrama
  • Monday, September 17th, 6:00pm - 7:00pm

Technology and the internet have become key aspects on modernizing the business lines and activities of financial institutions. International growth depends on offering attractive new products and channels to manage finances, communicate and connect easily. Cybercriminals are keeping up with the trend by innovating and adapting their techniques to make easy money exploiting those new channels and platforms.

Fraud has become the number one problem for financial institutions. It should be the priority number one when you are managing security operations for a bank. Fraud should be your obsession, your enemy, should drive your metrics and is your investment enabler.

Security operations depend on the right strategy and tactics to defeat your adversaries and adopt the right posture to deal with evolving threats.

We define security operations as: Protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability information systems of an organization through: proactive design and configuration, ongoing monitoring of system state, detection of unintended actions or undesirable state, and minimizing damage from unwanted affects, so protecting systems and information is totally critical. What we have to protect from fraud is very easy: money.

Focusing security operations on fraud prevention is the best way to add value to financial institutions. It is the best way to measure efforts and investment. Integrating fraud prevention into the security operations center bring the banks the ability to mitigate the most critical risks in a very comprehensive way for the c-level suite and respond to the real threats impacting customers and the institution itself.

This talk explores how to define the security posture from the SOC management perspective for any banking institution in a practical and holistic way. It is based on the deep analysis of threats and adversaries by studying their strategy, tactics and operations. We will increase our prevention, as well as facilitate detection at the earliest stages to expedite reaction to fraud incidents to minimize their impact.
