What do I receive with SANS Self Study Tuition?

  • SANS printed course books

Am I able to purchase the GIAC Certification Exam attempt with my SelfStudy course?

Yes, you are able to purchase the GIAC Certification attempt with your SelfStudy course. If purchased along with your training, the cost of the certification attempt is $599.00. You will have four months of access to complete your two GIAC practice tests and one proctored exam.

If you did not include the GIAC Certification attempt at the time that you registered for your SelfStudy course, you may add the exam to your registration provided it is still within your first 30 days of access to the course. Once your first 30 days of access have passed, you will need to purchase a Challenge exam. For more information on the Challenge exam, please visit http://www.giac.org/registration/challenge

What is the OnDemand Bundle?

The SANS OnDemand Bundle is included with your SANS Self Study tuition. For more information on the SANS OnDemand bundle, go to http://www.sans.org/ondemand/bundles

Am I able to download the MP3 audio files to keep?

Yes. Click on each file and:

  • select the "Save As" option
  • select the location you would like the file stored
  • change the file type to .mp3

Can I request for an extension to download my MP3s within my 4-month access period?

Yes. Your access can be extended beyond your original 4-months of access by purchasing an extension. You can purchase 30-day extensions to your course for $199, but you are restricted from purchasing extensions beyond one year from your original date of access.

If you have not purchased the GIAC Certification exam with your SelfStudy course, please call (301) 654-7267, Monday - Friday, 9am - 8pm EST to purchase your SelfStudy extension.

If you have purchased the GIAC Certification exam with your SelfStudy course, you must purchase a 45-day GIAC extension. The cost of a 45-day GIAC extension is $319.00. To purchase the extension, you must click on the GIAC Certification Portal link, "Certification Attempts" and then "Purchase Extension." The "Purchase Extension" link is available 15 days before your certification attempt deadline, through 15 days after your certification attempt deadline. The extension will add 45 days to your current expiration date, regardless of when you purchase the extension. Once purchased, certification attempt extensions are non-refundable and non-transferable. Your SelfStudy course will be extended to match your new certification expiration date. However, please note that your SelfStudy course access will only be guaranteed for a total of one year, regardless of the number of certification attempt extensions you purchase.

NOTE: Effective April 1, 2014, the cost of a 30-day SelfStudy Extension will increase to $249.
SelfStudy Extensions will be available for up to 30 days after your expiration date. The option to extend your course will no longer be available after the 30-day grace period

Can I receive a Certificate of Completion for my SelfStudy course?

SelfStudy students can obtain a Certificate of Completion when the corresponding SANS OnDemand Bundle or GIAC certification exam attempt has been successfully completed. When the OnDemand Bundle is not available for a SelfStudy course, downloading all course mp3 files is the requirement for obtaining the SelfStudy Certificate of Completion. To obtain a SelfStudy Certificate of Completion, you must email selfstudy@sans.org.

Can I share any of my SelfStudy course materials?

No. Users may not copy, reproduce, distribute, display, modify or create derivative works based upon all or any portion of the courseware in any medium whether printed, electronic or otherwise, without the express written consent of the SANS Institute. Without limiting the foregoing, user may not reproduce, distribute, re-publish, display, modify, or create derivative works based upon all or any portion of the courseware for purposes of teaching any computer or electronic security courses to any third party without the express written consent of the SANS Institute.

How do I receive support with my course during my 4-month access period?

SelfStudy students may email selfstudy@sans.org to ask questions to the Online Subject Matter Experts regarding any portion of their course or labs.

SelfStudy students may also email selfstudy@sans.org with any customer service related questions.

How and when do I receive my course materials (books and lab media) for my SelfStudy course?

Your printed course materials (books and lab media) will be mailed to the mailing address that you entered at the time of registration. Once your payment has been received, it should take 3-5 business days for your shipment to be received depending on the shipping method that you choose during registration.

Your online course material (MP3s, OnDemand Bundle and Virtual Lab) will become available approximately 24 hours after payment has been received.

How do I access my SelfStudy course?

To access your MP3 files, log into your SANS Account at https://www.sans.org/account and click on the "SelfStudy link on your 'Account Dashboard' page.

If your course includes the OnDemand Bundle, you may access your OnDemand bundle by logging into your SANS Account at https://www.sans.org/account and clicking on the "SelfStudy link on your "Account Dashboard" page.

If your course includes a Virtual Lab, you will receive four emails from virtual-labs-support@sans.org containing the information needed for accessing the virtual lab for your course exercises.
