The Ultimate Pen Test: Combining Network and Web App Techniques for World Domination
- Ed Skoudis and Kevin Johnson
- Monday, September 29 * 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Most penetration tests are focused on either network attacks or web application attacks. Given this separation, many pen testers themselves have understandably followed suit, specializing in one type of test or the other. While such specialization is a sign of a vibrant, healthy penetration testing industry, tests focused on only one of these aspects of a target environment often miss the real business risks of vulnerabilities discovered and exploited by determined and skilled attackers. By combining web app attacks such as SQL injection, Cross-Site Scripting, and Remote File Includes with network attacks such as port scanning, service compromise, and client-side exploitation, the bad guys are significantly more lethal. Penetration testers and the enterprises who use their services need to understand these blended attacks and how to measure whether they are vulnerable to them. This session provides practical examples of penetration tests that combine such attack vectors, and real-world advice for conducting such tests against your own organization.

- Register now to play
- October 1st - 3rd, 5pm to 10pm at Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas
Welcome to the most complex cyber exercise competition of its kind hosted at the top information security training event in the world.
This year's ICE II will feature Paul and Larry of pauldotcom.com in a hacker throwdown to see who is the best network attacker and defender. Paul and Larry will each have a major network to defend, while they also attack each other. The event is open to all SANS Las Vegas attendees. Players can pick a side, defend their own network, attack at will or view and snipe from a distance.
Laptop Alert
You may bring your own laptop to attack from (we cannot provide enough stations for the attackers). However, please understand that this is a hostile network. Do not have any sensitive personal or corporate data on anything you decide to plug into the network. SANS is not responsible for your system if someone attacks it during the exercise.
We will provide an internal server with attack tools for download. You are responsible for all the data on the laptop as well as your own care and feeding. We'll provide an IP address and a network map and a target list. Again, this is a hostile network, and we will in no way be responsible for damage done to your system.

SANS Technology Institute Brief

- Wednesday, October 1
- 8:00pm-9:00pm
SANS Technology Institute Master of Science degree programs offer candidates an unparalleled opportunity to excel in the two aspects of security that are most important to the success of their employer and their own careers: management skills and technical mastery.
Over the next 20 years, information technology will become so central to all aspects of our lives, from recreation to warfare, that information security will rise in importance and scale. It will become a profession with more than 500,000, and perhaps 1,000,000 people employed in positions in which they have significant roles in shaping the security of their employers' systems. Those people need managers -technical directors and chief information security officers who are deeply skilled in the technology and who have excellent management skills.
If you aspire to help lead your organization's or your country's information security program, and you have the qualifications, organizational backing, and personal drive to excel in these challenging degree programs, we will welcome you into the program.
Please join us for SANS Technology Institute's Third Commencement Ceremony. Russell Meyer, STI's third graduate, will be awarded the Master's Degree in Information Security Engineering.
