This is your opportunity to maximize your training time and turbo-charge your career in security by learning the full SANS Security Essentials curriculum needed to qualify for the GSEC certification.

In Security 401 you will learn the language and underlying theory of computer security. At the same time you will learn the essential, up-to-the-minute knowledge and skills required for effective performance if you are given the responsibility for securing systems and/or organizations.

No single technology will meet all of an enterprise's security challenges. However, by implementing a defense in-depth strategy that includes multiple defensive measures, you can go a long way in securing your enterprise. Understanding the paths available to organizations that are considering or planning to deploy various security devices and tools such as intrusion detection systems and firewalls is just as important as knowing how to protect against these attacks.

Security 401 teaches the principles of network and wireless network security. You will learn how protocols like TCP/IP work, how to analyze network traffic and determine hostile traffic, how routers and firewalls can be used effectively, and how to create sound security policies. You'll also learn password management, including tools for password strengths on both Unix/Linux and Windows platforms. Each section in this course covers one area of technology that will play a part in a company's overall information assurance program.

The SANS Security Essentials course will run for 10 weeks and is divided into 7 sections:

SANS and GIAC Certification Overview

  • Security Essentials I: Networking Concepts
  • Security Essentials II: Defense In-Depth
  • Security Essentials III: Internet Security Technologies
  • Security Essentials IV: Secure Communications
  • Security Essentials V: Windows Security
  • Security Essentials VI: UNIX Security
This comprehensive course is particularly well suited to security professionals and managers who want to fill the gaps in their understanding of technical information security, for professionals who want to understand information security beyond simple terminology and concepts and anyone new to information security with some background in information systems and networking. Security 401 will prepare you for the GIAC Security Essentials Certified GSEC certification.
